A look into the casting controversy surrounding the upcoming musical.
Rumors are swirling in theater circles that Iya Villanueva could eventually be elevated beyond her role as understudy in “Bongga Ka, ’Day! The Annie Batungbakal Musical,” as discussions around the show’s casting continue online.
Villanueva was recently revealed as the understudy to lead star Atasha Muhlach, whose casting has drawn mixed reactions from netizens. With the production under intense public scrutiny, some industry observers are speculating that Villanueva might later be positioned as an alternate lead to help balance audience reception.
The speculation remains unconfirmed, but it has gained traction alongside ongoing conversations about the musical’s casting process.
However, industry insiders are shutting down rumors that Muhlach skipped the audition process. On Instagram, entertainment columnist Salve Asis posted what appears to be a photo of Muhlach standing in front of the musical’s banner with the text overlay: “Audition ni Atasha, may resibo!”
Asis also shared a direct statement from Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) president and PETA Plus program director Melvin Lee, who firmly defended casting Muhlach as the titular Annie Batungbakal.
“Atasha delivered a strong audition, showcasing solid singing, dancing, and stage presence. She displayed natural chemistry with the male actors and blended seamlessly with the ensemble of triple-threat theater performers,” Lee wrote.
Addressing the online doubts about her suitability for the gritty role, Lee’s statement emphasized that Muhlach brought the exact “charisma, warmth, and panache” needed to convincingly lead the production, noting her natural chemistry with the co-stars Sam Concepcion, KD Estrada, Jeff Moses, and Anthony Rosaldo.
This high praise directly counters online critics who argued that the Muhlach scion’s highly polished, affluent image and natural manner of speaking weren’t “giving Annie Batungbakal.”
This definitive defense comes on the heels of intense public scrutiny and a heated online debate about nepotism and casting transparency within the local theater community.
The backlash initially stemmed from a viral TikTok post by an audition hopeful who claimed she attended the production’s two-day open casting call and never saw the young actress, fueling unverified rumors that Muhlach was already rehearsing while public auditions were still actively ongoing.
“Hi! No hate po. Respectfully, I was there during the two-day casting process, and I didn’t see Atasha in either day’s auditions,” the TikTok user wrote. “Kung may nangyaring hiwalay na audition o private casting, ibang usapan na iyon.”
The post fueled speculation about whether a separate or private audition process took place, with some calling for more transparency from the production team.
Adding to the discussion, rumors within the local theater community allege that Muhlach may have already been in rehearsals while auditions were still ongoing. This perceived timeline overlap led some netizens to question whether the role had effectively been decided in advance.
Netizens also questioned Muhlach’s suitability for the role, saying her polished image and manner of speaking did not match their perception of Annie Batungbakal. “I love Tash pero ’di talaga giving sa Annie Batungbakal,” one user wrote, while another commented that she may have been a stronger fit for a Western-style production.
Others, however, defended the actress and urged the public to give her a chance. “Wala na po tayong magagawa kung siya ang gusto nila. Bigyan din natin ng chance si Atasha na ipakita ang talent niya,” one supporter wrote.
Amid the debate, Villanueva’s involvement has become a focal point. While understudies are standard in theater productions, the current speculation reflects broader conversations about casting decisions, audience expectations, and opportunities within the industry.
As of writing, neither the production team nor Muhlach has issued an official statement addressing the audition-related claims or the circulating rumors.
