Passengers can now pay for fares using eligible Mastercard cards and linked mobile wallets at designated Fast Lanes, adding another contactless option for Metro Manila commuters

Metro Manila’s push toward cashless commuting is picking up pace.

LRT-2 has begun accepting contactless payments using eligible Mastercard credit, debit, and prepaid cards, as well as mobile wallets linked to Mastercard cards, allowing passengers to pay for fares with a tap at designated Fast Lanes instead of buying or reloading tickets.

The move adds another payment option for one of the metro’s busiest rail lines, making it easier for commuters to use the same cards and digital wallets they already rely on for everyday purchases. It also supports faster passenger flow, especially during peak hours, while reducing dependence on cash and stored-value transit cards.

The rollout signals the continued expansion of open-loop payments in the Philippines, where existing bank cards can be used directly for public transport. As more transit systems embrace interoperable payment technologies, commuters gain greater flexibility, while banks, payment providers, and transport operators move closer to a more connected digital payments ecosystem.

The contactless payment capability also supports compatible issuer mobile wallets on NFC-enabled Android devices. Each transaction is backed by Mastercard’s security features, while the company said it continues to work with transit operators and industry partners to expand interoperable payment options across the country.
