‘Someone, Someday’ tandem fuels talk on shifting norms as fans clash over evolving careers beyond fixed on-screen partners.
The announcement of Kathryn Bernardo and James Reid as the lead stars of the upcoming romance-drama “Someone, Someday” has reignited conversations about whether the local entertainment industry is slowly moving away from its decades-old love team formula.
The renewed debate gained traction after a video from the pair’s recent promotional event began circulating online. In the clip, James serenades Kathryn with his hit song “Randomantic,” drawing loud cheers from the audience. The moment was particularly striking as it brought together two of the country’s biggest stars who rose to fame through entirely different love teams—Kathryn with Daniel Padilla and James with Nadine Lustre—making the collaboration feel unexpected to longtime fans.
While many welcomed the fresh pairing, others questioned Kathryn’s decision to take on another on-screen partner. “Parang hindi talaga makapag-stand on her own. Every era may bagong ka-love team,” one netizen wrote.
Others, however, pushed back, arguing that working with different co-stars is precisely what it means for an actor to establish an independent career. “Standing on her own means she can work with any artist without relying on a fixed love team. Hindi naman porke’t may leading man, love team na agad,” another fan said.
Kathryn was previously paired both on-screen and in real life with Daniel Padilla, forming one of the most successful and enduring love teams. Their tandem became a defining part of her career, making her current projects outside a fixed pairing a point of public interest.
The discussion mirrors earlier remarks by Nadine Lustre, Reid’s former real-life and reel-life partner, who said her current pairing with Alden Richards (for “Love, Siargao”) reflects how the industry has begun evolving beyond exclusive tandems.
“During that time, love teams were such a big thing… I can’t imagine celebrities working with the same person over and over again. Parang walang bagong flavor ang project,” she said.
For decades, the love team system has been the industry’s most bankable formula, producing some of the country’s biggest stars. In recent years, however, more actors have expressed a desire to work with different partners, while audiences have become increasingly open to projects built around individual performances rather than permanent pairings.
With Kathryn and James—two major stars shaped by different eras of love teams—sharing the screen, many observers believe the project could signal a broader shift. Increasingly, established actors are no longer defined by a single on-screen partner, but by the range of stories and collaborators they can take on.
“Someone, Someday” is produced by Dreamscape Entertainment and is set to premiere on Netflix and ABS-CBN platforms.
