Lovi Poe looks back on career-driven years, wishes she became a mom sooner

After years focused on her career, actress says motherhood changed how she sees her life.

Motherhood gave Lovi Poe a kind of love she never knew she was capable of feeling and it also made her look back on the years when she was consumed by her career.

Now that she has experienced being a mother, the actress openly admits that there is one thing she would change about her journey: she wishes she had done it sooner.

For years, Lovi’s life revolved largely around work. She had projects she wanted to pursue and career goals she still wanted to achieve, leaving motherhood as something she was willing to let happen in its own time.

“I was so career-oriented that my life revolved around work talaga,” Lovi admitted in an interview with Karen Davila.

She recalled having an “if it happens, it happens” attitude toward having children. Her decision to remain focused on her career also occasionally became a source of tension between her and her husband.

“I still have so many things to do. There’s so many projects I wanted to pursue,” she recalled thinking.

But becoming a mother eventually changed the way she looked at the decision she once considered something that could wait. “I wish I did it sooner,” Lovi said.

Her transition into motherhood, however, was not the magical experience she had imagined.

Lovi revealed that she went through a difficult delivery after developing HELLP syndrome and preeclampsia. Because of the complications, she was unable to immediately hold her newborn daughter.

“I wish it was as magical as it is in the movies,” she shared. “When I first saw my child, I couldn’t hold her.”

The actress recalled being extremely groggy following the delivery and deciding to wait until she was more present before holding her baby. Her condition left her bedridden for several days, while she struggled to fully wake up.

When she finally regained awareness, her first concern was her daughter.

“Hindi pa siya kumakain,” Lovi remembered saying as she worried about how long she had been unconscious and whether her baby had been fed.

That moment made her realize how naturally her maternal instinct had already taken over. “‘Yong instinct mo talaga as a mother, it just suddenly comes,” she said.

Looking back, Lovi now sees motherhood not as something that interrupted the career she had worked so hard to build, but as a blessing that arrived at the right time.

After once believing she still had so much to accomplish before becoming a mother, she now considers the experience one of the greatest and most beautiful chapters of her life.

“All of it was in God’s timing,” she reflected. “I think it’s the most amazing, most beautiful thing in the world. I didn’t think I’d feel this much love.”
