Song began as “Chinita,” inspired by “Meteor Garden” heroine Shan Cai.
In an interview on “Ang Walang Kwentang Stage,” the singer-songwriter shared that the song was penned by her church friend, songwriter Jed Dumawal. According to Constantino, the track was originally titled “Chinita” and was inspired by Shan Cai, the beloved heroine from “Meteor Garden.”
Despite not writing the song, “Chinito” went on to become one of the defining hits of her career and remains one of the most recognizable OPM songs of the 2010s.
Over the years, many listeners associated the track with TV host and comedian Ryan Bang because of his close friendship with Constantino and public speculation about their relationship. However, the singer clarified that it was her song “B.A.B.A.Y.”—not “Chinito”—that was inspired by Ryan.
The pair later had a lighthearted “closure” during a 2022 episode of “Tawag ng Tanghalan,” where Ryan admitted, “Akala ko ayaw mo sa akin,” addressing years of fan speculation.
