Backlash over comments on Marina Summers’ historic MUPH hosting spills offline, affecting international drag event.
An Australian drag show featuring Filipino queens has been canceled following backlash over comments made by “Drag Race Philippines” alum Angel Galang about Marina Summers’ historic hosting stint at Miss Universe Philippines 2026.
The show, titled “Doll Domination,” was set to stage in Melbourne on May 28 and Sydney on May 29, with Angel alongside fellow performers M1ss Jade So and Popstar Bench. Local Asian-Australian drag acts were also scheduled to open the shows.
The cancellation came amid online uproar triggered by Angel’s now-viral posts, which many interpreted as a dig at Marina’s performance as host during the May 2 coronation night.
“Binagot mo ang MUPH Totoong buhay lang,” Angel wrote, followed by similar remarks such as “Bagota ang sena kaloka” and “Binagot nya naman kasi talaga,” fueling speculation and criticism from fans and fellow queens.
Marina, meanwhile, had just made history as the first trans woman to host the Miss Universe Philippines pageant—an achievement widely celebrated within and beyond the LGBTQIA+ community.
As the backlash intensified, Angel issued a public apology. “Sorry, I’m really, really sorry, especially to my sister, Marina,” she said, admitting she “overexpressed” herself and was “completely in the wrong.”
She also thanked those who called her out, saying the criticism would help her “grow into a better person,” and reiterated her support for fellow drag artists: “Masaya ako para sa lahat ng achievements ng mga sisters ko. Totoong buhay lang!”
Community tensions boil over
The controversy quickly drew reactions from within the drag community. “Drag Race PH” Season 2 winner Captivating Katkat praised Marina’s milestone, calling it “a massive win for trans representation,” before jokingly adding, “And to my naksh*t… asan ba yung pamalo ko?!”
Angel’s biological sister, Season 3 winner Maxie Andreison, confirmed she personally reprimanded Angel. “I don’t tolerate that kind of behavior,” she said, emphasizing that the drag community “is not just a game.”
M1ss Jade So also came to Marina’s defense, calling out critics within the community. “The world is changing yet these people… are complaining,” she wrote. “Ask yourself: ‘Do you really want change?’ Or inggit?”
“Drag Race PH” judge and broadcaster KaladKaren echoed the sentiment, urging people to look at the bigger picture. “You can say whatever you want about Marina’s hosting,” she said, “but the fact that she’s there on stage—a trans woman hosting the biggest beauty pageant in the country—speaks volumes.”
Despite mixed reactions to her hosting performance, Marina received an outpouring of support from both local and international drag figures, including Tia Kofi, Gawdland, and Kerri Colby.
The “Doll Domination” drag tour is officially off the calendar after online backlash regarding critiques of Marina Summers’ historic hosting duties at Miss Universe Philippines 2026 created a divide among prominent Filipino drag performers.
