Angelica Panganiban’s powerful comeback in UnMarry sparked cheers and debate after the MMFF Gabi ng Parangal, proving that impact goes beyond trophies.

Fans and moviegoers who had already seen “UnMarry” walked out of cinemas with one lingering question: why didn’t Angelica Panganiban take home the Best Actress trophy at the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival Gabi ng Parangal?

The question gained traction following the announcement of the Best Actress winners, which included Krystel Go for “I’mPerfect,” alongside multi-awarded actress Nadine Lustre for “Call Me Mother” and rising star Bianca De Vera for “Love You So Bad.”

While the honors celebrated diverse and deserving performances, many couldn’t help but feel that Panganiban’s much-talked-about acting comeback deserved a moment of its own on the awards stage.

That sentiment was echoed loudly inside the ballroom when “UnMarry” was hailed as Second Best Picture of the festival. During the film’s acceptance speech, director Jeffrey Jeturian drew cheers from the crowd after referring to Panganiban as his “Best Actress,” a remark that instantly fueled applause and reaffirmed the actress’s impact on audiences.

When it was her turn to speak, Panganiban expressed gratitude with sincerity and humor. “Gusto ko pong magpasalamat Metro Manila Film Festival, sa lahat po ng bumubuo maraming salamat po sa pagbibigay sa amin ng second Best Picture,” she said. She then drew laughter from the audience as she candidly added, “Naghanda ako ng speech hindi ko nasabi,” showing her trademark warmth and relatability.

The actress went on to thank her husband, Gregg Homan, for supporting her return to her passion. “Actually, gusto ko pasalamatan ang asawa ko dahil hinahayaan niya akong gawin ang first love ko, which is creating and making films and movies. Gusto ko lang sabihin sa inyo kung gaano ko po kamahal ang industriyang ito, kaya po sana, magtulungan po tayo at pilitin po nating buhayin ang pelikulang Pilipino,” she shared, earning another round of applause.

Beyond awards night, “UnMarry” continues to speak for itself. The film has received an undeniably positive response from moviegoers and has emerged as one of the top-grossing entries of this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival—clear proof that its story and performances resonated deeply with the public.

Meanwhile, Go’s historic win for “I’mPerfect” also marked a powerful moment for representation. Her victory highlighted that talent knows no boundaries and amplified awareness and sensitivity toward persons with Down syndrome.

In the end, the MMFF Gabi ng Parangal became a celebration of varied triumphs of groundbreaking representation, bold storytelling, and performances that moved audiences.

While Panganiban may not have walked away with a Best Actress trophy, the overwhelming support from fans, peers, and moviegoers suggests that for many, she already won where it matters most: in the hearts of the audience.
